GOV ENO’S COMPASSION DEEPENS IN IKOT EKPENE SENATORIAL DISTRICT

Three years after assuming office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno has sustained his commitment to redefining leadership through interventions that directly impact the lives of ordinary people.
One of the most visible expressions of this commitment is his aggressive investment in housing, which has so far resulted in the delivery of not fewer than 1,048 housing units across the State.
The figure comprises social housing schemes, institutional residences, civil service allocations, and estate developments strategically fashioned to expand access to decent accommodation while addressing the housing needs of different categories of residents across urban and rural communities.
At the heart of this intervention is the ARISE Compassionate Homes Programme, a flagship humanitarian initiative conceived to provide fully furnished two-bedroom bungalows for vulnerable households.
More than a housing project, the programme embodies Governor Umo Eno’s conviction that every person deserves the dignity, security, and stability that come with having a decent place to call home.
Such has been the impact of the initiative that the Governor expanded the programme’s initial target from 400 to 500 units before the end of his first term in office, further demonstrating his determination to strengthen social protection and improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable segments of society.
Already, 438 units have been completed and handed over to beneficiaries across the 329 wards of Akwa Ibom State, while construction continues on additional units in various locations.
Each beneficiary receives a fully furnished two-bedroom bungalow equipped with solar-powered electricity, a solar borehole with overhead tanks, water closet facilities, household furniture, and a 500,000 Naira business support package to help beneficiaries establish sustainable sources of livelihood.
Of the 438 units delivered so far, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District accounts for over 100 units spread across Abak, Essien Udim, Etim Ekpo, Ika, Ikono, Ikot Ekpene, Ini, Obot Akara, Oruk Anam and Ukanafun Local Government Areas.
For the beneficiaries, these homes represent far more than bricks and mortar. For years, many of them lived under leaking roofs, in dilapidated mud structures and in environments that offered little to no protection from rainstorms and harsh weather conditions.
During every rainy season, dark clouds often heralded anxiety, sleepless nights and the fear of losing what little shelter they had. For such families, housing deprivation was not merely a physical condition, it was a daily encounter with uncertainty, exclusion and hardship.
Today, that reality is steadily giving way to hope. Across villages in the senatorial district, ramshackle structures have been replaced with decent homes, vulnerable families have regained stability, and individuals who once felt forgotten now have newfound confidence in the future.
One such beneficiary is Mr Nsisong Daniel of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. For years, disability, homelessness and economic hardship combined to place enormous strain on his life and family. The situation became so difficult that his family was torn apart.
However, on June 26, 2025, his story took a remarkable turn when he received the keys to a fully furnished ARISE Compassionate Home.
Beyond providing shelter, the intervention restored a sense of dignity and stability to his household. Most significantly, it facilitated the reunion of his family as his wife returned after years of separation.
In Oruk Anam Local Government Area, another touching story highlights the impact of the programme.
Madam Regina Thomas and Madam Veronica Thomas, widowed co-wives raising nine children after the demise of their husband, had spent years confronting severe economic and housing challenges.
Their circumstances changed on July 1, 2025, when Governor Umo Eno handed over a fully furnished ARISE Compassionate Home to the family at Ikot Esenam.
For the widows and their children, the intervention provided more than shelter. It restored hope, eased years of uncertainty and offered a fresh foundation upon which they can rebuild their lives.
Across Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, stories such as these have become recurring testimonies to the life-changing impact of the ARISE Compassionate Homes Programme. They speak to a policy that has moved beyond official pronouncements to produce tangible outcomes in the lives of ordinary people.
Beyond the statistics, the programme’s impact is evident in the smiles of beneficiaries, the relief of vulnerable households, the restoration of family stability and the confidence of children who now live in safer and healthier environments.
As the ARISE Compassionate Homes initiative continues to expand across the State to meet the 500-unit target, it remains one of the clearest expressions of Governor Umo Eno’s compassionate approach to governance and his determination to ensure that the benefits of development reach the most vulnerable members of society.
